The micro blogging website Twitter and NBC Universal are about to announce a major Olympics partnership that will cover the London 2012 games. Twitter will serve as an “official narrator” for the Olympics providing tweets from athletes, their families, fans, and TV personalities.
These tweets will appear on Twitter.com during the live event. According to the Wall Street Journal,
“Twitter will effectively serve as an official narrator for a live event and NBC will promote the Twitter page and hashtag with on-air promotions and links to athlete interviews or video clips”.
The deal between popular social media site Twitter and NBC Universal doesn’t include any money exchange but the two will surely cross-promote each other. Twitter’s main focus will be on taking out messages from insiders including Olympic athletes and NBC personalities as well as encouraging people to watch live broadcasted coverage. On another side NBC will constantly publicize Twitter during its two weeks of on-air coverage. Opening ceremonies for the 2012 London Olympics will be held July 27.
Twitter, which is almost six-years-old website doesn’t grasp much ad revenue as Facebook but this move could deliver bonus points as millions of new users for the first time will take a look at the website.
Brands like General Electric Co.and Procter & Gamble Co. has already procured ad space on Twitter which signals that the social network will soon become prime marketing platform for big and live events.
